Healing, 150 Years of the Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary

Completed in 1874, The Ancoats and Ardwick Dispensary was one of Manchester’s earliest hospitals, serving the sick and injured of a burgeoning urban workforce.

It was the first building of a rapidly-expanding Ancoats Hospital, a community asset close to so many hearts. It’s also the last to survive, at least in part. That any of it remains at all is down to the passion of local people who fought the threat of demolition with such tenacity.

After years of decay the Gothic-style façades have been renovated and the distinctive tower – Ancoats’ beacon – has been rebuilt. Now tenants in newly-built apartments call this place home.

I was commissioned by Great Places Housing to make a book documenting this building’s amazing story.
